holidayland is a pop-up shop opening on plaid friday (november 25th) and running through december at marion and rose's workshop right here in oakland! word on the street is, little paper planes will be there too, featuring some pretty rad artists.

the fair will be held at the concourse exhibition center in san francisco december 17th and 18th...right before i head off to cleveland for the winter!

i was so happy to be able to enjoy the first weeks of fall this year...the last few years i was up to my eyeballs in school work.

my boyfriend and i visited a farm/pumpkin patch last weekend. and though the weather was super hot, we still had a great time...

my friends had a pumpkin carving party that same night, complete with homemade donuts and whiskey and cider cocktails

i planned on being a rose (le petit prince!) for halloween, so i used that as an excuse to dye my hair red (my bad mirror shots are the reason i am not a fashion blogger)

in my sinus infection-fueled haze, i painstakingly sewed rose petals onto a red dress that i bought years ago and i didn't actually try it on until the night of the costume party. alas, my derrière was too big. i made a makeshift skirt with some coral chiffon i had lying around, but it was quite uncomfortable. so, i broke out my krylon face paint and my rose & marigold headband and went with my old trusty: a calavera...

today i stamped up my recycled cardboard packaging for more needle lace necklaces to be sold at the usuals on the alameda in san jose...

i decided to drive down to the shop with my friend, laura, instead of shipping the necklaces and i'm glad i did! here are a few photos...

this dress was styled with a super cute bow belt, which i somehow managed not to photograph

had to take this one for my boyfriend who is a huge sharks fan...

they had a lot of amazing beaded jewelry...

we got to chat with marie who co-owns the store with her brother. she also graduated from cca a few years back...it's so inspiring to see other art school alumni doing their own thing and doing it well! the usuals is a great shop that supports local and independent makers...go there!

oh. also we ate at flame's, near santana row...i liked the decor :)

has it really been almost 2 weeks since my last post? where does the time go! i started a new job at lacis, an online costume & textiles management certificate course, and i'm looking for a new (cheaper!) place to live. but aside from all that, i've been getting ready for holidayland!

i persuaded my lovely friend, kim, to model my hand painted scarves...the designs are done freehand and are borrowed from my needle lace necklaces...here are a few photos, seen through rose-colored glasses...

well i had my last day working facilities at the product design company on friday. it was a bittersweet day...i'm sad to leave, but i am happy for a change and for the fun things to come!

my coworker, brian, brought me some salted caramels from hooker's in sf...they were delicious...

i am starting a new job at lacis on saturday, so i have this whole week off! i've already had a pretty productive weekend. i sewed some black misses flared jeans into cute high-waisted skinnies...

worked on some needle lace...one more to go

i got a stamp and stamped some stuff

and took a photo of this fern...cool

love that bokeh!

i've got some fun things headed my way!

i'm excited to announce that my needle lace necklaces will be sold at a hip little boutique in san jose called the usuals! if you happen to be in san jo, stop by on the alameda!

i will also be selling some things at holidayland in oakland this year...holidayland is a super cool pop-up shop that takes place november 25th - december 24th.

and the fun news i just got about 5 minutes ago is that i will be selling at the renegade holiday fair yay!...i'm splitting the booth with a mystery person, so i'm excited to see who it will be!

late in the afternoon on sunday at sjmade (after a few beers and a lot of good food) i decided to leave kevin in charge of my booth while i checked out the other vendors. there were a lot of great makers and vintage curators...but one booth caught my eye. i don't know if it was the meticulous use of cross hatching or the illustrations of red riding hood (i'm in love with that story) that i was more drawn to. but megan from studio m.m.e. is super talented...so you know, i bought some things.

i am very excited to be workin' my booth at SJMADE with SJEATS in san jose this weekend! i decided at the last minute to dye and paint some silk scarves with drawings inspired by my needle lace necklaces...

getting all my stuff together so i can wake up early tomorrow and not hate myself...

if you happen to be in the south bay, stop by san pedro square! i'll be in the perazzo building, booth 10!

anyway, i'm getting a little behind on my blogging lately...here are some dresses i worked on over the weekend!

1920s embroidered cotton

i love the patterning

here is the second dress i have been working on...that 1930s silk wedding gown. the fraying in the front will be hidden with this lovely embroidered organdy trim! i'll sew it in so that it mimics the scallop shapes in the neckline.

this was hanging up and i HAD to photograph it right quick...i can't get enough sequins!

oh, and also...i got a new tattoo a few weeks ago! i had drawn it out some time ago, but finally saved the money to get it. so here's a photo my friend denise took on a super fun canoe trip...

hello...i just got word that i will be a vendor at the SJMADE fair in san jose! it's true i don't nor have i ever lived in san jose, but they save a few booths for sfbay area artists and craftspeople..hooray! it'll be september 17th and 18th at san pedro square market alongside SJEATS' A Moveable Feast food truck fair! super fun!

i love weekends...a lot. saturdays are my days at lacis doing restoration work. i love it, i love being there among all the beautiful things, being able to fix old dresses and talking to the cute ladies that come in. i love working with my hands all day, even if it's simply stitching a new hem. i can see myself doing this for a long time.

hand-stitching new horsehair onto a 1930s silk wedding dress

the second dress i'm working on...a 1930s silk charmeuse wedding gown. i took off and replaced the horsehair hem, just need to tack it up.

i have a bit of work to do on the top of the bodice where the material is fraying. also, hemming the armholes.

the draping still isn't quite right...i need to see it on a body, but haven't found a dress form it'll fit. we just took down the exhibit, though so i should be able to use one of the mannequins next week

okok i know i keep posting about things i buy...but they're all special things and i have excuses for every one of 'em, i swear!

i went to the alameda flea market last sunday. despite the clouds, i found some great things! i had been in search of a train case to match my old samsonite luggage. i found a few, but they either didn't have mirrors or didn't have a tray and i want one with a mirror AND a tray (i love vintage, but i love it more if i can use it)

at the end of the fair, i found the perfect one...the lady who sold it to me told me all about the places she took it, too!

i bought this amazing shirt for $5! 80's does 20's! can't wait for a snazzy place to wear it!

the beading is in perfect condition!

these are not from the flea market, oh no. these are a lovely pair of shoes i bought with a gift card...oh yes! they're the best. i think i'm in love.

so, while my parents were in town last weekend we went to benicia...there were some pretty cute antique stores. one of which i was lectured in for buying an ash tray and another that had an amazing collection of antique lace and dresses (comparable to maybe one room of lacis) as well as one of the cutest old ladies ever! anyway, i saw a gorgeous pink depression glass decanter and i didn't buy it. i drink whiskey! i like pink! i have a small collection of pink depression glass! why didn't i buy it!? so the next day i scoured etsy for pink glass decanters and didn't find much except for this AMAZINGLY perfect one from merely the moon:

it has the bust of a man and the word "courage" above it. the other side (which i didn't take a photo of before posting this) has a pressing of a ship. the most awesome ever, right?!

it came in the mail today just in time for a whiskey and gilmore girls night i had already planned with my friend rachel. i also bought a 4-piece set of pink depression glass sherbet glasses that can easily moonlight as whiskey glasses...but they have yet to arrive. ok no more shopping.

i've been trying to work on being present in my life. while taking a class at the zen hospice guest house last year, we learned the importance of being present and finding life in life.

this has been such a crazy week...i didn't get a job i interviewed for and really wanted, my parents were in town, and news of the incredible tragedy of the death of our vp of engineering and his family

but i started taking bart to work, which involves a 1.7 mile stroll around lake merritt. i don't know if you know this, but lake merritt is the oldest wildlife refuge in the US, so the birds there are pretty amazing. several times this week i saw a group of white pelicans eating their breakfast.

sorry, it's a bad phone photo.

walking is so much more pleasant than driving. i'm able to notice things like this rather than stressing about traffic on the bay bridge. it makes me feel like i can be present in that 35 minutes.

anyway, i was very happy for saturday to come so i could get my hands on some silk. it's amazing how when you're doing something you really love doing, time flies by and you forget to eat and you can just hunker down and work. this is how i feel about restoration. i can be engrossed in silk for 6 hours.

this is the main dress i'm working on...a silk charmeuse wedding dress from the 1920's. i wish i had a before photo. someone had added some chiffon to the waistline and then cut it off, so i went in and took that off along with the sash.

i then reapplied the sash, but there was a lot of damage from previous stitching.

so erin and i picked out a beaded trim that i'll apply around the waistline to conceal the pin pricks. it's great because she's letting me make some decisions about what to do with the garments. i picked the beading over a couched champagne ribbon because when i took it out in the sun to test the coloring of the beads with the dress, it was just magical!

silk + cotton tulle!

and this is what i have to look forward to. i love being able to give new life to these beautifully and painstakingly made dresses.
