one of the women at lacis is working on the bobbin lace pattern from the laton jacket out of this book
the laton jacket is an example of english jacobean embroidery...like crewelwork...with fanciful plants and animals...often embroidered with wool onto linen. this one is done in silks and silver gilt threads. this jacket is particularly interesting because it's one of the few that survives along with its portrait. the portrait of margaret laton was done in 1620 and the jacket was made about a decade earlier. could you imagine wearing hand-woven, hand-stitched, hand-embroidered clothing with handmade bobbin lace trims? makes me feel pretty sad about my recent cotton dress with machine-made lace purchase at h&m. it was on sale and perfect for summer weather, though.
both the jacket and the painting are on display at the victoria and albert museum in london...i really wish i could be there now for their "cult of beauty" exhibit!
